little tienda : a "mexican bohemian" giveaway

Nothing like a little bohemian colour to warm you on cool, grey days.

I was first introduced to Em and her store Little Tienda last spring. Since then we have chatted over many an email, supporting each other as we attempt to build little businesses around our families. She has spent considerable time sourcing beautiful, handmade clothes and homewares from little towns in Mexico; she's ummed and ahhed over every embroidered stitch and dye imaginable. Her clientele are a passionate bunch - lovers of vivid colour, billowy blouses and bohemian detailing, they appreciate an injection of happy in their wardrobes and their homes.

............................................................................................................................................

The winner of this giveaway will receive the following items from Little Tienda:

- a 100% cotton rebozo scarf, hand-loomed by artisans in south-west Mexico. The style is "open weave" - traditionally used to carry babies, it will keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. Valued at $60 - winner will choose colour.

- hand loomed, hand dyed 100% wool cushion, made-to-order by a family of artisans who have been making cushions and rugs for over forty years. I adore this cushion! Valued at $95 (no insert).

- "la flor" blouse - I wear mine with jeans, a cardi and a scarf to add a little colour to my otherwise monochromatic winter wardrobe. Made from 100% cotton, this blouse has a lovely, loose fit. Valued at $69 - winner will choose size and colour

- use it as a bedspread, throw, picnic blanket or yoga mat, the falsa blanket is beautiful and practical. Valued at $60 - winner will choose colour.

To enter all you need to do is leave a comment and answer this question: "What's your favourite way to stay warm in winter?" Em and I will choose a winner based on the best little story you can tell (no essay required!). The winner will be announced in this post on Thursday 27th June at 9pm.

Good luck!

  9. My daughter lives alone but often comes home for a weekend to visit us and friends. If she goes out at night with friends and is coming in late, I pop a hot water bottle in her bed. When she comes in cold and tired, it's a little treat that reminds her I love her.

  15. I like to climb back into bed with my 3 year old, my 5 month old and pull my winter's nest handmade quilt up to our chins and snuggle. The fire's on downstairs but the house needs to warm up in the mornings. We tell stories and sing songs and enjoy time together before the day starts.

  23. I'm from Canada, so when it's cold, it can be unforgiving, biting, and frigid. A particular trick I use is tucking my pants into my socks to conserve body heat. When I go to bed, I layer myself with old wool blankets passed down from my grandmother.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I pile on the layers and cover the bed with as many blankets as I can, I even wear a wooly hat in bed!

    ReplyDelete
  25. One cold winter's night I went to a local pub with my mothers group. It was of those big warehouse places and despite wearing my coat, I was cold to the bone when I got home late at night. When I went to bed I discovered my husband resting in my side of the bed to warm it up for me. Better than an electric blanket or hot water bottle!

  29. What a lovely giveaway! My favorite way to stay warm is a night at home. The fireplace is hot. The record player spinning. I'm in the kitchen, making something beautiful and warm and delicious. My husband is dancing with our girls. Warm hearts make warm bodies.

  32. Curled up on the couch under a soft, warm blanket that I spun and knitted. With my 4 year old daughters, husband and dog curled up all around me. Best ever!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. It has to be all 4 of us (nearly 5) snuggled up around the wood burning stove. One year, when all the water and gas pipes froze we even cooked our dinner on it. I think it was the best meal I've ever had! x

    ReplyDelete
  34. my favorite way to stay warm in the winter is with a good cuddle session with my husband. we live in an old, drafty apartment on the third floor that tends to get a little chilly in the cooler months. we love putting our baby asleep in her room nearby and getting under heaps of knitted throws to cuddle and watch an old movie or read books together. it is simple and cozy. it serves as our happy place. a place for us to reconnect and engage with one another, without the distraction of a wee one. it's in thinking of this moment alone that i crave winter.

  35. It's all about the light for me. Firelight, candlelight...a favourite lamp....not that one...the other one...that one's too bright.....and a walk outside rugged up at dusk in the cold Canadian air ...just as lights turn on and fireplaces are being lit and the blinds not yet drawn along the little streets....nothing makes me feel warmer than being out in the cold at that time of day...

    ReplyDelete
  36. We just had the fire cleaned today, so I had to let it go out. I cranked up the oven and made cinnamon scrolls, nothing like baking and comfort food to keep you warm.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I love all of her things!
I am overseas at the moment and have actually missed the Little Tienda Instagram photos...they are generally such a bright part of my day!

My favourite way to stay warm during the Brisbane winter is to fly to the States where it is summer! Which is just what I have just done!
Unfortunately that is not an option every winter so my second favourite way to stay warm is to have a family cuddle party. The doona and pillows get dragged from the bedroom into the living room. We all...including the dog...pile on and then cover ourselves with quilts. There is mulled wine for the parents and hot coco for Toddler C. We sip and snuggle and watch Peppa Pig!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Curled up with my little family, sitting near a fire, telling stories ;)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh my goodness, such colourful beauty!

In order to really feel warm in winter the best thing is going outside for a walk in the cold cold winter air and then, after returning home, lighting a fire in the wood oven and taking a footbath (in a thrifted, old, huge, silver-coated goblet!) while either sipping ginger tea or eating a warming chickpea-potato-carrot-leek-stew seasoned with ginger, garlic, chili, thyme and rosemary. And of course a big, warm woolen sweater, a lot of blankets and woolen socks. If the snow happens to fall outside in the dark winter night while the fire crackles inside, it's kind of magic...

    Fine

  40. My favorite way to stay warm is to sit in front of our woodburning fireplace with a warm cup of chai in hand! It never fails to warm the body and soul.

  43. I stay warm by snuggling up in bed with my fiancée, Andy and the kiddos. We watch a family movie or read a pile of books with cups of hot chocolate and a big bowl of homemade popcorn!

  44. Well, I'm a lazy one : I like tea but you'ld have to tuck out of the blanket to make it and it's so warm and cozy on the couch...

But for now, it's summer time and I have no problem keeping my warmth...

    ReplyDelete
  45. Good luck all best way to stay warm.is to chase my two cheeky boys around the garden and blow raspberries on.their bellys :-)

  46. It used to be a hot chocolate, all snuggled up on the couch under a blanket with the TV on.. Now it's cuddling my 9 day new baby boy in a wrap and kissing his forehead in one minute intervals while wondering the entire time how I got so lucky to be his mama!

    ReplyDelete
  47. My grandma lived in a terraced house in South Wales. There was no central heating so she was something of a hot water bottle enthusiast. When I went to visit having a hot water bottle to cuddle up to in bed felt like a cosy treat. As the stopper was opened you used to hear a little exhalation, a hot water bottle sigh. x

    ReplyDelete
  48. When I was a little girl, I would watch my mom quickly rub her hands together and blow in them each time she got into the car in the winter time. I catch myself doing this all winter long to try and warm my fingers and it makes me laugh. It's nice to know that no matter where life takes me, little parts of my mom will always come with. :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I steal my husband's explorer socks and big cosy polar fleece hoodie. Couple it with a ginormous bowl of minestrone and I'm pretty cosy and toasty.

    ReplyDelete
  50. My mum's hand knitted socks. She knitted them from yarn that belonged to my grandmother whom never got around to knit it herself. Bas. kets of yarn from generations ago turned into socks that now keep my feet toasty and warm. That and large mugs of tea.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I offer this equation:

A roasting chicken + a game of hide'n'seek with the littles + mug of spiced cider + the promise of a tumble in some flannelette sheets later = warm in winter :-)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I bake, when the oven is on it warms the house and when I'm done baking I sit in the rocking chair with my big fluffy lambskin by the window with the winter sun curled up with a slice of whatever warm goodness I have made in one hand coffee in the other.
The winter weight I'm gaining from this also helps me stay warm!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Well I've lived in a couple of different cold places like Northern Ireland and Ohio, and yet I've found this remedy to stay warm works on both sides of the Atlantic. Sure, the cozy cover and hot water bottle work for a bit, but I've found the coldest winter to be cured by a good conversation over a cuppa. The cuppa tea starts out pipin' hot, poured right from the kettle into my favourite cup, cup grasped tightly by frigid fingers. But it's not the tea that warms me up, because it turns cold before I can gulp it all down. Confession: I rarely finish a full cuppa tea for the conversation that goes on. You see, it's the company shared, the friendship formed, the stories spilled, the truth told over the cuppa tea that truly dispels any winter in my heart, which always feels worse than the below temperature outside. Just as the teabag colours the water, so do the people colour my life. The sweetness of the person far succeeds a spoonful of sugar. I have tea-stained teeth and a glad, grateful heart to show for it. So what warms me up? Sitting down and having a good conversation, never mind the cold tea leftover in my mug. Fill up my cup. Fill up my heart.

  55. At the moment it's snuggling up to my 3 week old baby boy in front of the fire, lots of milky kisses and rubbing my cheek on his soft hair. Couldn't be better. Jxx

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have discovered that steaming, hot cuppas are enjoyed even more thoroughly when drunk with plenty of cuddles! A white porcelain mug still warm from the tea inside and cuddled to your cheek is simply heavenly. I love doing this on days when the fog covers the blue queensland mountains that I call home and the rain is gently falling on the old tin roof. This is how I enjoy winter.

    ReplyDelete
  57. My favorite ways to stay warm in the winter are herbal teas saved from the garden in summer, snuggling with my love and my puppies (and also running around with them in the snow, I LOVE winter!) and snowboarding. I love the feeling of hunkering down, watching the snow fall and finding ways to laugh and crafty projects to work on... I know that it is more than one way, but I don't think I have just one way to stay warm and enjoy winter. It is one of my favorite times of the year!!!

    ReplyDelete
  58. cardigans, fuzzy socks, ugg slippers, and warm herbal tea...love just thinking of it!

    ReplyDelete
  59. My favourite way to stay warm in winter is to say 'no' when I want to and 'yes' when my heart feels it. Usually my 'yes' is to cozy nights by the heater, herbal tea, favourite books in bed, writing and occasionally we rug up in layers for a winter walk. Leaving my schedule free enables me to stay in and forget about being a social butterfly, which is what my heart and body really needs! In winter we remember our closeness. :) x

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm originally from the north where Winter barely exists. A little cardigan is all that's required when the season changes. Moving to Melbourne brought a new meaning to Winter, one that at first I battled with, staying indoors moaning about the cold. After three Winters here, I made a resolution to embrace the cold. I started to really appreciate the beautiful skeletons of trees as they shed their leaves, the difference in the light especially in the mornings, to invest in warm wollen stockings, a heavy coat and yes, lots of tea. Getting outdoors with my little one is no longer a battle anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  61. In the winter, I often find myself resenting the cold, wanting to hibernate and counting down the days to the solstice (today! hooray!) but this year I've got the use of a bicycle. And although the ride down the hill in the mornings requires a beanie over my ears, jersey underneath my high-vis, and a wool scarf around my neck, and absolutely leather gloves, I find myself craving the energy that cold air into my lungs going down the hill gives me. Usually, I get to work pink-cheeked, energised, and warm. Also, I pour myself large cups of tea in glass jars to warm up my hands whilst working from my bed at night.. and who could forget the warmth of a huggable hot water bottle?!

ps. I'm in NZ so understand I may not be eligible to enter. Just felt like sharing a story anyway. x

  62. Snuggled up in front of the fire, with my nana's crocheted blanket on my lap, and the warm, wriggly bodies of my four little people all around me - and my beautiful big person love too! And if we're going to get really particular, the picture is complete with a sweet, soy-milky cup of tea, and a little craft project happening too! xox

    ReplyDelete
  67. I wish it could be endless sunggles and cuddles with my 3 babies but they are all too wriggly and they get restless and run away from me after a couple of minutes. Luckily i have cups of tea and sunshine on the back step. If i'm even more lucky i'll get to read a page or two of a book before one of them interrupts me :)

  71. Staying warm in winter to me means bringing the KNITWEAR out of the closet! Knitwear of various blends & garments are worn and snuggled to keep myself, my husband and two boys snuggly and warm. x

    ReplyDelete
  72. A thick slouchy knit, a hot water bottle and an open fire. We don't actually have a fireplace in our home but a girl can dream!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I put on thick wooly socks, leggings and my 5 month old. Wearing her keeps me warm, partly from her body pressed against me but mostly because she makes me smile and my heart swell. Keeps the blood moving from all the swelling it does! X

    ReplyDelete
  74. In an ideal world, keeping warm would be by way of cuddles but sadly, that's not always practical. So, it would be with the warmest of cuddly jumpers, thick wooly socks and a bowl of homemade soup. Yum! x

  75. Hello, I’m Chu.
We don’t experience winter here in the Philippines yet we have a wet season, which starts in June (it’s now so rainy here) and prevails until September to October. On rainy days, we often have “tinolang manok” (chicken soup) to fight the cold. My family prefers the native free-range chicken for this dish. The chili leaves, ginger, green papaya, and malunggay (horseradish) leaves make the dish oh so flavorful and perfect to warm my three year-old daughter’s icy nose and toes. After the meal, she kisses me and we hug and snuggle by our living room window, looking outside, feeling the cool of the rain once again—this ritual and the meal we shared as family are enough keep warm the huge mama heart I have, Jodi. : )

  81. Clothingwise, I love to wear any kind of vest or kidney warmer or simply a bigger scarf tied creativly around my waist, as this seems to be a crucial part of my body when it comes to staying warm! Everything else is just hot soup (carrot, sweetpotatoe, pumpkin) and hot mulled wine! ;-))

    xoxo Trine

  82. Right now.....a gas heater, ugg slippers, a homemade blanket, a chai tea and a little dog. Knowing my family and friends love me and flannelette sheets to snuggle into later. 85. A glass of red wine, a hearty stew cooking on the stove, Ella Fitzgerald coaxing us to dance in our socks and robes and layers. Then splashes in a warm bath, bedtime stories, and baby feet kisses. Snuggling in with my love under the quilts and watching a favorite movie.
    Thank you for the opportunity!

    ReplyDelete
  86. Get cold first, going out for an evening walk in the snow and moonlight. Then change into fresh wool socks and sit by a fire with a mug of stew or a hot toddy. Enlivening and warming!

    ReplyDelete
  87. The best way to stay warm in the winter... I am cold all year long so I have to be especially creative in the cold Minnesota weather. Fuzzy socks, although not the cutest, are the ideal footwear of a eternal freeze baby. I usually pair that with my largest sweater. Although it makes no sense, the larger the sweater the warmer I seem to be. And to keep my neck and hands warm I usually knit a scarf while simultaneously wrapping it around my neck as I knit. To warm my heart and soul, a hot dark chocolate mocha and the man I love by my side. I've spent countless winter nights in this manner and sometimes the summer heat makes me miss the excuse to get extra cuddly under a warm blanket.

  94. Over-sized sweater around my shoulders. Woolen socks on my feet. And a wee babe tucked sleepily into a wrap across my chest, she giving me warmth as I give it to her.

  95. The way I stay warm for the winter? Leaving Canada, and moving to Indonesia where winter chills can't catch me! (kidding. {sort of?})

Now that I no longer have to worry about being freezing for six months of the year, I can look back on winters with some degree of nostalgia, and remember fondly my winter uniform of long johns, cozy sweaters, wool socks. In the evenings, I'd grab a book, pull a kitchen chair right up next to our farmhouse wood stove, and watch as my cat found her warm spot directly under thestove, little ears just shy of singing, and we'd both be warm right to our bones.

    ReplyDelete

  100. Right now, in our first house with free cold air conditioning from the gaps in floorboard, the best way to stay warm at night is spooning the husband!! Hah .. seriously! And even if we ain't in the spoonin' mood, he's 6 foot 7, fills most of the bed, and warms the bed up nicely :)

    ReplyDelete
  101. Well, that's easy. When it get's really cold in winter, me and my man cuddle until we're both warm, my feet don't freeze anymore and.. summer is back! I adore the quite hours we spent on our couch, watching nature change in season through the window, feel completely protected in his arms and talking about warmer times, the meals we're going to prepare together and the friends we're going to go with on a winter walk through the snow.

    ReplyDelete
  102. In bed with my two little boys snuggling either side of me. Bliss. Until one of them breaks wind!......

  106. What a fun giveaway! I stay warm wrapped in blankets with two kitties tucked up against me! (Although it is summer in Boston, so staying warm is far from my mind right now!)

  107. The only way for me to get warm when I'm chilled to the bone in wintertime is to draw a hot steaming bath and soak in it for an inappropriate amount of time.

    ReplyDelete
  108. One of my favorite ways to stay warm in the winter is to pile on as many blankets as possible, light a fire (and/or candles), and cozy up with my love. it's the best way to let all the chills out. (:

  113. Winter in this house revolves around a roaring fire, which means we spend a lot of time in the living room. Sheepskin rugs cover the chairs, thick blankets are stacked high for cuddling up together in the evenings, and we light candles to warm the light which can feel so blue (as can we if we're not careful). Pinecones burning on the flames and a glass of mulled wine in hand, and we're content.

  114. Whilst my kitchen warms with the sweet aromas of a baking apple tart, we would sit in the lounge room overlooking the grey sea to play mahjong with my husband's Malaysian grandmother. The perfect fusion of his eastern and my western cultures bonding over chilli hot chocolates.

  115. I love placing a hot water bottle against my kidneys (just like my ma always told me too), put on some of Mama's hand-knit socks, and cuddle up under a blanket (my favourite one to snuggle under was made by my sister).

  116. i've tried to leave a comment three times so sorry if this repeats but....

  117. It's weird to think about winter, as it's summer here. And, truthfully, even Winter in California isn't too bad. But on those rainy nights- when the sound of heavy rain drops have you wondering if your roof is leaking and the smell of wet concrete reminds you of a lotion you have in your bathroom cupboard- I like to listen to music to keep warm. I pop on a record, grab my littles, and twirl. Rain falling on the otherside of the window and my little munchkins in my arms swaying like the waves of the sea. The music and the movement keeps me warm.

  121. Copious, copious amount of Hobart Breakfast tea and feeding our fire continually with wood. Oh and mongrel socks - if you haven't discovered them yet, I highly suggest investing in a pair. They are so warm and so very colourful. Perfect for a cold day; warmth and colour.

  122. In winter when the days get cold my son says to me it's time for extra long snuggles now and I couldn't agree more. Nothing makes me warmer than snuggles with my boy :)

  123. Dancing! The layers of clothes come off and it's incredibly warming and invigorating. If if I'm feeling a little risky, I'll even 'untuck' my singlet. Probably one of the handiest things my mother instilled in me was to wear a singlet. I always keep my chest and back warm in winter wearing my singlet tucked in-not always so hip but definitely hot.

  124. Waking up slowly to the warmth of my family unfolding each morning--my partner and our baby son--intertwining bodies under a goose-down comforter and wool blankets, as the crisp, electric-blue dawn carefully rises over our sea-side home. Our faces nuzzle one another in sweet welcome.

My partner and I individually brave the chill to go pee, one of us rekindles the woodfire and puts a pot of ginger tea on as we find the rhythm for our day; there are root vegetables to process, home projects, crafts & creativity. Time for fire magic, intention movement. We find rhythm in the mysterious, in nature's cycle through ritual. For winter is a death time, an internal time, a time of getting to the root. Trying to consciously expand out instead of shrinking away.

  125. A few years back my mother got herself very unflattering pair of fleece pants and would wear them constantly. I used to make so much fun of her..but oh how i am eating my words! Last week i got my thick pair of pants (very flattering at least) and i am in love! I can.not.take.them.off!! So my awesome thick fleeces are my favorite way to stay warm..throw in my two little girl, thick fluffy duvet and some good old bed romping and it is heaven!

  129. My love of Winter knows no bounds.

Cold frosty mornings, lots of fog, drips of ice dangling from the ferns. Winter for me is warm toddler snuggles in the middle of the night, hot breath on my neck as a welcome home from my husband (instead of a kiss!), red wine in front of the open fire, iview on the ipad in bed laughing together like gurgling drains over Russell Howard's Good News show, sheepskins on the leather couch, and lots of lovely comforting nourishing food. Winter for me is a chance to slow down, reassess what's important, and envelope my family in warm comforting surrounds.

  131. I make it my mission to be as unsexy as possible: fleece pants, thermal underwear, beanies (the daggier the better) and my very favourite down booties that make my feet look freakishly large (for a visual: http://www.mec.ca/product/5011-601/mec-get-down-booties-2-unisex/?f=10&q=down%2Bbooties). All of the above coupled with endless cups of tea, good books and snuggling make winter wonderful.

  132. We just installed a Vermont Cast Iron stove that was my husband grew up with in his family home so now you could mistake our living room for summer if you don't look out the window. Just add some mulled spiced wine and a good book and we're set!

  133. From the first sign of cold you can not separate me from my hot water bottle, we are fast friends, in bed, in the car, at kinder meetings, on the couch. At the first sign of freezing there are two or even three! Its love.

  134. This is a very layered answer. Wool socks, bulky sweater, cozy fire, hot chocolate, and cuddled in the middle between my husband and boys. When I was younger we had a very steep driveway that led directly to the main road. We used to take our sleds and zoom down the driveway. The snowplow driver really enjoyed giving us a jolly good scare OR maybe he was actually trying to get us;) Hot chocolate and layers...from childhood into your twilight years it is a timeless way to stay warm:)

Thank you for the chance xo,

  137. We make applesauce with cranberries in the howling time of midwinter. Cooking down apples picked from my grandpa's tree in early fall, the cranberries snap as they burst open in the moist heat of the saucepan. My love kisses my hands, hot from the stirring, and my heart is warm.

  138. Having loved ones over for a dinner feast! This usually consists of roast chicken or a big hearty soup, with plenty of drinks to go around. Nothing like good friends and bourbon to warm ones frozen bones! (Wool socks don't hurt either ;)

  139. My favourite part about winter here in Canada (and we know winter, real winter :) ) is coming in from outside and cuddling up with a hot toddy and a good book in front of the fire. Having someone to curl up with you under a warm blanket is pretty special too - that can be a child, friend, relative, lover. ps, I really LOVE the colours in those gifts, in particular the little dress. I've been looking for something like that for my daughter.

  140. It is funny for me to think about winter when it is so during the day in Santa Fe right now. People warned me about being 7 month pregnant in June. In the winter to keep warm I love to roast and bake anything. Spending time indoors working on crochet and eating tasty things from the oven keeps me warm and inside.

  141. I just hope it's not too late to post a comment to enter this giveway.

My favorite way to stay warm in winter ... em ... I remember as a child, going to music school with my cello on my back, being so cold, my "baby" (the way I called my cello) too ... I entered the classroom and opened the box. My cello was so cold, my long and thin fingers too. And I start to play. At the begining, it hurt a lot as I started (trying) to move my fingers. Step by step, the blood was coming in my fingers and being warmer and warmer. This energy going from my fingers to the rest of the body. When I play music I feel like I tell a story so I completely forget how I feel, if I'm cold, or hot, if I'm sad or not, I'm just telling a story so this warm my heart and my body ...

  142. When mid winter cold seeps through the cracks, and even warm water seems to burn, we pile into bed. Our little ones all clamor up into our bed and under the comforter with us. Sometimes we read. Sometimes we sing songs. Sometimes we makes tents with our legs up in the air under covers- giggling all the while. I cherish those little moments when all of my offspring are still safely under my wing.
